About Hubs, Routers & Switches
This is an informational site about telecommunication devices known as hubs, routers, and switches. These machines are the heart of most networks. Without these 'gadgets' there would be no Internet as we know it. These tools play an integral part in most of our lives, but few of us have any real idea what they are. Therefore, I have put this page together to help us understand more about these devices. Within this page there are links to other pages that go from very basic to fairly complex topics concerning these devices. I have found that it is very hard for a beginner to find much useful information about these subjects, so I have combined some basic information with sites that I have found to be very informative. Hubs are telecommunication devices that act as repeaters. They take in a message from one branch and broadcast it out to every other branch.
Switches are telecommunication devices that repeat the message, but unlike hubs they only send the message down the appropriate branch of the network.
Router are telecommunications devices that directs messages toward their destination, often from one network to another, such as over the internet. They operate at the network level of the OSI model and can determine preferred paths to a final destination.
